Starkey Hearing Aids
Starkey is an American owned manufacturer that carries all styles of hearing aids; Behind-The-Ear, Receiver-In the-Canal and custom. Their niche market is custom devices, being known for small custom devices which are both powerful and wireless. They also have the first hearing aid which is made for iPhone®.
Starkey’s latest platform release delivers the ‘Z series’. These devices contain the new BluWave 4.0 operating system, which delivers optimised audibility, intelligibility, comfort and sound quality. This is achieved by using a new technology in compression systems, which mimics the natural effect of the auditory system allowing softer sounds to be heard clearly while delivering louder sounds at a comfortable undistorted level.
The Z series also features the new acoustic scene analyser, which will detect the listener’s current environment and adjust the noise reduction and speech enhancement accordingly. In a noisy environment the direction of the microphones will alter, giving up to 70% improvement of speech understanding, than if they remained in surround sound mode. The Speech ID feature will track the talker, so if they are moving they will continue to be within the beam of the microphones. This is also assisted with the introduction of new MEMS microphones, which provide increased frequency response and longevity.
Some musical instruments are able to play a note that is the exact tone of the whistle that a hearing aid can make. The Z series features both the purewave feedback eliminator, which will inhibit the whistling, while also incorporating specialised music processing. This enables the listener to enjoy music without the hearing aids altering the sound, for a more natural listening experience.
The Z series is compatible with the SurfLink Mobile 2, which is a mobile phone streamer, hearing aid remote, remote microphone and media streamer all in one. Unlike other manufacturer streaming devices, the SurfLink Mobile 2 does not need to be worn around the neck, being a hands free device. The SurfLink Mobile 2 can also be paired with the SurfLink Media, for easy to use music and TV streaming to the hearing aids.
The Halo is Starkey’s made for iPhone hearing aid. Available in the Receiver-In the-Ear style, it is designed for use with the TruLink app available on iPhone, iPad and iPod. The device allows mobile, music and FaceTime streaming through Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology. The app allows for geotagging using the GPS feature on your iPhone, so the setting of the hearing aids automatically change upon arrival of a location. You can use the app to adjust the settings of the hearing aids so every environment sounds the way you like it best and then you can save it as a memory. The app is also designed as a remote control to change through memories or adjust the volume. You can even have Siri read texts and emails directly into your Halo hearing aids.
