Hearing Loss Treatments
The treatment for any hearing loss will depend on the cause of the hearing loss. An audiologist will need to assess you to determine the type and cause of any hearing loss you may have. We can test your hearing at either of our clinics in Perth or Geraldton.
Some causes of hearing loss, such as wax blocking the eardrum, can be easily treated by an audiologist. Other causes may need to be referred on to a GP for further investigation. There are also some causes of hearing loss that are permanent, these hearing losses may be treated and managed with improved communication strategies and assisted listening devices or hearing aids.
One of our audiologists will need to assess your hearing before we can recommend a treatment and we will only recommend a treatment when it is clinically indicated.
If you are assessed and found to have a permanent hearing loss our recommended treatment is hearing rehabilitation. This means we discuss with you the specific areas you are having most difficulty hearing and form a personalised rehabilitation plan for you. This may include giving you information about how to maximise the hearing you do have, strategies for hearing in situations where you are experiencing difficulties and, where appropriate, recommending a hearing aid to assist your hearing.
It’s important to note that a hearing aid is a tool in your rehabilitation; it is not a cure, and any treatment for hearing loss including hearing aids still requires you to be involved and active in your treatment.
The hearing aid you are recommended is always based on your personal needs and preferences. There are many different types and styles of hearing aid available, all designed with specific features and suitable for different hearing losses and client requirements. This is why we will never recommend a hearing aid to you without assessing you first.
Hearing and Audiology is an independent hearing aid provider. This means we stock a large range of hearing aids and do not work on commission. We will only ever recommend hearing aids that suit your needs and are in your budget. For more information on our hearing aids and how to choose an aid please click here.
As permanent hearing loss can be gradual, most people have been experiencing hearing loss for some time before they seek treatment. Recent studies have shown that when your ears aren’t collecting sounds as well as they should, your brain can compensate but it has to work very hard to fill in the gaps. This means your brain changes to try and cope with the added work of understanding sounds. If hearing aids are fitted, they help ease the brain’s workload. It may take some time for the changes that have occurred in the brain to reverse. This is why when we treat hearing loss by fitting hearing aids, we follow-up with you regularly throughout the first few months and adjust the aids as required to match your brain’s changing needs. The more you wear your hearing aids the better your brain will adapt.
All of our hearing loss treatments are based on scientific studies and current best practice, with a focus on personalised treatment that addresses your unique needs. This approach has been proven to increase the effectiveness of hearing loss treatment. When our hearing aid clients were asked how happy they were with their new hearing aids 3 months after they were fitted 96.8% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their new hearing aid and 100% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with our services
We are proud to say our Perth and Geraldton clients receive the best care possible, regardless of the treatment required.
